Coaching Revisited

Since starting my blog, I have gotten to talk to and know many riders from our area. I realize that there are riders here who would love to upgrade, but just never seem to be getting better. When I talk to them about pretty basic stuff from training to racing I either get a blank look, or acknowledgement that they know, but just haven't put this knowledge to action.

Riders in this district seem to have some cash. I'm not saying they are millionaires, but when you do a training ride and most guys around you have 4 or 5 thousand dollar bikes, you have got to think these people have money.

So what I am thinking is instead of throwing 1 or 2 thousand dollars into another set of wheels, maybe people should get some coaching - just long enough to get some basic fundamentals like how to ride in a pace line, or the why and how to train your weakness.

I know a lot of what a coach might teach you at first will seem obvious, but maybe paying for it instead of having someone tell you for free (or reading it on GamJams or something) might help it stick. The money side of it will make the information more real.

There are plenty of coaches - Pete Cannell, BJ Basham and a ton of other guys linked to GaJams, and they are hella expensive but people would probably have a more enjoyable time racing their bike if they knew what they were doing and practiced some pretty basic stuff.

  3. Pete, BJ - You owe me money! No, but seriously, they might be irritated because; 1. I say that coaches are expensive and 2. I recomend riders only use them for maybe four months or so, long enough to get some prerequisite fondations. Racers are spending all of this money on stuff, and going nowhere without any direction.

    also - I only knew one retard who rode named Fernando, and he was pretty damn fast. I have NEVER been beaten by someone named Anonymous, so I am sure I am way better than you and I am sure Fernando never was beaten by someone named Anonymous either.

  4. Great post. Can you speak to the folks out there training now in their big chain rings on climbs? Is there a race coming up in March (these are Cat 3 and 4s) that I am not aware of? Who peaks so early in the season? I am planning my peak in June and then again for Cross, should I be big ringing it too?

  6. Than call yourself anonymous(sorta) or if you are not afraid to simply use an actual name try what mom gave you. Coaching would be nice but no cash for that in my budget. It is cool of you Chuckles to give a word of advice and not in a obnoxious way like you know condescending.

  8. The 10 oclock ride was out of control!! thanks to Team Harley for the showing us how its done. You guys are HAMMERING!
    Can someone tell me who the man is with a yellow jacket and white bicycle. everytime I go on the ride he is yelling at me and this time he was yelling at Harley riders too?!? who is this man. is he a safe rider?

  9. James Wagner is the guy in the yellow jacket with a white bike. He is very experienced and not dangerous but gets a little grumpy sometimes when people do unexpected things. Nothing to worry about.

  10. He also gave me a bit of his complaining earlier on the seven oclock. It is something he often does and as a experienced guy this should equipe him with the ability to make adjustments, without the often verbal whittling. He is safe enough just annoying.
